Essential Oils & Pregnancy

Essential oils are a great way to find relief & comfort during pregnancy. With that being said, it is best to limit (not omit) your use of essential oils during the first trimester of pregnancy, as this is the most delicate time of pregnancy.

If women are experiencing any morning sickness, fatigue, or minor discomforts, then essential oils are a great natural way to alleviate these concerns. Just remember, that a little goes a long way. Our sense of smell is heightened when pregnant so it's best to use a small amount of an essential oil that is properly diluted.

According to Jane Buckle, “the use of essential oils in pregnancy is a contentious subject, especially during the vital first 3-month period. It is extremely unlikely that a nightly bath containing a few drops of essential oils will cause any problems for the unborn child”.  She also states “there are no records of abnormal fetuses or aborted fetuses due to the ‘normal’ use of essential oils, either by inhalation or topical application.

The following essential oils should be avoided throughout pregnancy, labor and while breastfeeding:

  • Star Anise Illicium verum
  • Aniseed Pimpinella anisum
  • Basil ct. estragole Ocimum basilicum
  • Birch Betula lenta

Mommy & Me

All Mommy & Me Blends are diluted to ensure the utmost safety for you and your littles.

All blends from the Mommy & Me Line are great for pregnant mothers during any trimester. The Playful Blend is great for energy which is much needed during the first trimester. The Nighttime Blend is great for sleep and naps. The Loving Blend is great for calming any anxiety and worries. And the Nursing Blend is great for a mood boost and helping clear congestion which is common during pregnancy. Use these blends throughout your pregnancy, during delivery, and when your baby is finally here!

Blends for moms are diluted to a 1% dilution ratio which is considered safe for all pregnant moms and breastfeeding moms. When using essential oils during pregnancy make note that less is more. Use your blends less frequently during this time of life.

Blends for baby are diluted to a .25% dilution ratio which is safe for babies 3 months and up. (Essential oils can be used on babies under 3 months if a specific benefit is needed, but please be cautious and use a very small amount at a time)  It's not recommended to use essential oils before one month because babies skin is sensitive and still growing. And, when your baby is in the first month of life, it's important that they are able to smell their parent's natural scent, rather than an essential oil, even though an essential oil is natural. This ensures that baby can smell and bond with her mother during the first few weeks of life and that no skin reactions occur.  Blends for baby are best when applied on the bottoms of the feet and up and down the spine. Always patch test a small area on the baby's forearm before applying. Remember, a baby's skin is thinner and more sensitive than ours. Less is more for your little ones. Consult your physician if you have any questions or concerns.

The Mommy & Me Blends are designed to be used by both mom and baby together to enhance bonding and connecting with your little one. When the essential oil blend is rolled on the mother the baby will be able to smell her mother and the scent of the oil. When you roll the oil on baby, she will get the benefits of the oil blend in her body, as well as the inhalation benefits. Having the oil blends synergistically rolled on both mom and baby will help bring a special bond between you two. Your baby will soon learn that the Nursing Blend aroma is time for breastfeeding, and the Cuddle-Time Blend is snuggle time, and the Nighttime Blend is time for bed. This is a special time in life for both mom and baby. Make it even more special with the benefits of aromatherapy.

The four blends in the Mommy & Me Line are:
